The launching of a new programme to combat traffickingof minors and young women from Nigeria to ItalyAn agreement signed by the Nigerian Government and UNICRI
UNICRI met yesterday with various representatives of Italian regions and experts from the Italian Cooperation to establish a new platform for decentralised cooperation within the programme: "Preventing and Combating Trafficking of Minors and Young Women from Nigeria to Italy" funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The UNICRI programme, the first phase of which was launched in 2002, aims to reduce the vulnerability of women and children to trafficking by strengthening educational, economic, and social capacities of Nigerian institutions and organizations.
EU-SEC Consortium Meeting at UNICRI Headquarters Transnational talks
On the 5th March 2008 representatives of Austria, Finland, France, Portugal and the Netherlands met at UNICRI Headquarters for the EU-SEC meeting. The participants discussed, on behalf of the EU-SEC Consortium, the implementation of the final and joint transnational activities envisaged by the project, with a specific focus on Private Public Partnerships in the field of security during Major Events.
UNICRI to hold follow-up Brainstorming session to enhance public-private partnerships
Based on the success of the initial brainstorming session, held in November 2007, to enhance public and private sector partnerships (PPPs) for the protection of vulnerable targets, UNICRI will host a follow-up brainstorming session in March 2008. The session, to be held on the UN Campus in Turin, aims to develop the channels of communication between members of both sectors and to build on the knowledge of best practices gained at the previous session.
Costa Rica adopts a new tool for Prosecutors' Offices against sexual exploiters
The Attorney General of Costa Rica made compulsory the use of the Information System for specialized public prosecutor offices for the investigation and prosecution of cases of commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking of minors (SISCESCO).
The Conference, organised by the Department of Public Security - Office of Public Order - of the Italian Ministry of the Interior presented, at an international level, the results of four years of activities of EU SEC. The project is coordinated by UNICRI - the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute – and funded by the European Commission – DG Research.
Judge Fausto Pocar, President of the ICTY, and Sandro Calvani, Director of UNICRI (United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute) earlier this month exchanged letters initiating a best practices project aimed at contributing to the Tribunal's legacy.
Following the exchange of letters, the ICTY with the assistance of UNICRI will draft a compilation of the Tribunal's best practices which can be transferred to other international and domestic regimes dealing with war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
The International Permanent Observatory (IPO) presented its stand at the Milan Security Expo 2008 in the presence of Alfredo Mantica, Italian Under-Secretary for State of External Affairs. UNICRI's Director, Mr Sandro Calvani, opened the stand, welcoming visitors from all over Italy to attend and to see the work of UNICRI. Also in attendance was Silvio Saffirio, Creative Director of one of the largest Italian advertising agencies.
