The principle of “leave no one behind” is at the core of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The importance of technology in realizing this global call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, has been emphasized on many occasions, including by the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who suggested “Technology can turbocharge the recovery from COVID-19 and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals”.

Preventing crime through the protection and empowerment of vulnerable groups is a strategic priority of UNICRI. Through its Centre for AI and Robotics in the Hague, the Netherlands, UNICRI has sought to explore the potential of emerging technologies in the context of its mandate.
