Environmental crime does not currently have a universally agreed upon definition, however it is regularly used to refer to almost any illegal activity that harms the environment for the (often financial) benefit of individuals, groups or companies. This can involve illegal exploitation and trafficking of natural resources, including flora and fauna, and soil and water contamination from illegal waste dumping.
On 29 November 2016, at the Palais des Nations, the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) will organize an event on “Using Big Data Analytics to Reinforce Security: Benefits, Challenges and the Future Scenarios”.
A technical report prepared by UNICRI on “Strengthening the Security and Integrity of the Precious Metals Supply Chain” has been presented and discussed on the occasion of the side-event held on 25 May at the 25th Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ).
More than 50 persons participated in the Side-event, including representatives from Member States as well as international organisations.
An International Conference entitled “Protecting Citizens’ Rights Fighting Illicit Profiling” will be held in Rome on 26 September 2014. Hosted by the Italian Society for International Organization (SIOI), the Conference represents a unique opportunity to present the main findings of the two-year project PROFILING.
European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Centres of Excellences Risk Mitigation Initiative (EU CBRN CoE)
The 20th EU-ASEAN Ministerial Meeting took place in Brussels on 23 July 2014. The meeting was co-chaired by Her Excellency Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission and His Excellency Pham Binh Minh, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam.
UNICRI presented new developments related to its CBRN Risk Mitigation and Security Governance Programme at the plenary session of the Annual Meeting to Coordinate Assistance and Protection under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which was held in Madrid, Spain, from 1 to 3 July 2014. The meeting, organised by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the CWC National Authority of Spain, provided a forum in which CWC States Parties shared their experiences in relation to the implementation of the Assistance and Protection provisions of the Convention.
