In today’s globally interconnected, technologically advanced society, science (and Chemistry as a sub-discipline) is fundamental to our daily life. While women continue to play an increasingly important role in the chemical sciences, they are still underrepresented in many important chemical safety and security functions.

Chemical and biological (CB) weapons have the potential to cause great harm and represent an appealing prospect for non-state actors due to their potential to generate widespread fear. From the letters containing fatal anthrax spores sent through US postal system in 2001 to, more recently, the repeated deployment of chemical weapons against civilian populations by Da’esh between 2014 and 2016 in Iraq and Syria, these events are designed to cause major suffering and disruption.

Within the framework of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) “Women in Chemistry” Project, funded by the European Union, the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) are calling for women active in the chemical safety and security sector who can support the Institute in the identification of best practices on women’s engagement in this field.
