In order to identify the root causes of radicalisation and violent extremism, and establish what kind of interventions are more effective in building the resilience of a community towards the appeal of resolving grievances by violent means, UNICRI launched a comprehensive multi-year effort in nine countries of the regions of Maghreb and Sahel in 2015. Following an intensive period of implementation, UNICRI has initiated an evaluation of the projects implemented by 83 organisations in Algeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger and Tunisia.
Organized within the framework of the European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Centres of Excellence (CoE) Initiative [https://cbrn-risk-mitigation.network.europa.eu/index_en], ARZ 2021 was a field exercise held in Beirut, Lebanon, in December 2021, which focused on countering CBRN terrorism.
On 16-17 July 2019, a UNICRI Team went to Beirut to discuss and consult with the Lebanese authorities responsible for preventing the trafficking of radiological and nuclear (RN) material. The visit was conducted within the framework of the project CONTACT – Enhancing capacities to prevent the trafficking of radiological and nuclear material in the Middle East. This regional project is funded by ‘Global Affairs Canada’.
Understanding the potential and promoting accountability

On the margins of this three-day event, the UNICRI Centre for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics and the INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation convened the 2nd Global Meeting on Artificial Intelligence for Law Enforcement from 2-4 July.
